Audra is a unique artist in terms of the range and diversity of her talents as a performer and songwriter. In 2015, she won a record breaking six Tony Awards as well as two Grammy Awards and Emmy Awards. The actress was also identified by Time magazine among the 100 most influential people and was awarded an award called the National Medal of Arts - the top award in America for excellence in art - from President Barack Obama. Due to her stunning soprano's tone and her unrivaled ability of telling compelling stories, she has found success on Broadway as well as at the opera and for television and film. In addition to her work in the theater, McDonald also has established a successful career as an internationally acclaimed music and concert performer. McDonald was born in Fresno California, where she was raised by a clan of musicians. While at the Juilliard School in New York City, McDonald received training as an classical vocalist. When she graduated, she won the first Tony Award as Best Performance by a Featured Actor in musical at the Lincoln Center Theater for Carousel (1994). The following four years, she also was awarded two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. These were for her Broadway performance in Terrence McGally's productions Master Class and Ragtime. She was awarded her fourth Tony in 2004 starring with Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun as well as in 2012. In 2012, she won five Tony Awards and was the first in the category of lead actress due to her performance in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess as the title role. In 2014, she created Broadway history by becoming one of the Tony Awards most decorated performer when she won the sixth Tony Award in the role of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role which was also the stage for her Olivier Award-nominated performance in the 2017 season of the London's West End. First actor recognized in all four acting categories, McDonald also set a record for the number of awards an actor has been awarded. Her credits in the theatre include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night marked McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is the Making of the Musical Seduction of 1921, and All That Followed. Frankie Johnny in the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald was first introduced to the television audience for her dramatic performance in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters first 100 years. In 1999, she costarred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the Disney/ABC television version of Annie. Then, in 2000, she played a regular role in NBC's well-known series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. Following her debut Emmy nomination for her role in the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit, written by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned to network television in 2003 with the drama about politics Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and starring Josh Brolin. The Bedford Diaries on the WB in early 2006 and Kidnapped, NBC. McDonald received a fourth Emmy for her portrayal of Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill, which aired on HBO in the year 2016. The Bite was a six episodes pandemic-themed drama created by Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. Having first appeared as U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in the year 2009 on CBS's legal show The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald returned to the part (now called Liz Reddick) as a season regular of The Good Fight on Paramount+ with 3 Critics Choice Award nominations for her performance. The actress also appeared in Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
